PJ PROSTHESIS - FROM ONE OF A KIND TO MASS CUSTOMIZATION

Updated: Jan 15, 2022

PJ Prosthesis is a universal platform that enables continuous development of modules and attachments to accommodate a wide array of functionalities and features for different users.

PJ Prosthesis platform began in 2018 when TOM’s Tel Aviv community created an affordable and lightweight yet durable 3D printed prosthetic arm. In summer 2021 TOM Global organization decided to focus on PJ Prosthesis platform's UX (User experience) and design optimization, aiming to make easily replicable process.

I joined TOM R&D team and Bezalel Industrial Design interns, to make PJ Prosthesis in Mas customizable aproach, together we dived into inspiring process of parametric design and definition of platform’s user experience (UX).

OVERVIEW

Prosthesis arm can be cosmetic or functional, and can be used usually due to an injury or other trauma. Type of prosthetic depends on various factors, such as the amputation level and a personal need. However, most of the prosthesis are very expansive, and not affordable due to long customization processes, expansive manufacturing costs, and intense labor.

The PJ Prosthesis was designed with the basic ability to make dimensions changes through the CAD system, yet, any customization interaction took a long time as there is a need for expert measuring, CAD (Computer-Aided Design) operator, manufacturer, and assembly to be synchronized on the same product.

THE CHALENGE

When designing customizable product we should undersatnt that this is not all about the product anymore, we should see the whole service from the begining to the end:

  1. inding the required product,

  2. making apropriate measuring

  3. inputing the measures into the prosthesis design

  4. And test but not lest the manufacturing ant the assamblu process need to be clear

  5. Model was colappsing after complex edditing

GOALS SEATING AND FRAMING

  1. UX/UI

  2. Prosthesis parametric CAD design including: limits and parameters realtions, anchor points, configurations.

  3. Easy ability to eddit customization parameters without CAD expert

  4. measuring guid

  5. manufacturing guide

FIELD RESARCH

Any project is vary uniqe ande requires a deep understandig of the needs, calanges and the limits. Most of customization process can be transformet fully or partiali into digital manufacturing
